New this year we are trialing a number of dwarf tomato plants. New Big Dwarf Tomato has been crossed with many different heirloom tomatoes, then crosses were crossed and crossed again! The goal was to create fruits that have heirloom like flavor borne on smaller, more manageable plants. These 2.5-4' plants are easier to care for (a tomato cage will suffice!) and do well in containers. Since we haven't tried these yet, all descriptions are from the Dwarf Tomato Project website. Please see the Dwarf Tomato Project for more information on this fascinating breeding project. Caitydid 80 days from transplant – first offered to the public in 2017 by Tatiana’s TOMATObase. Dwarf Caitydid is a regular leaf dwarf variety that produces oblate medium to medium large fruit that ripen to a medium yellow with streaks and swirls of red, inside and out. The flavor is well balanced and sweet. It originated from a cross made by Patrina Nuske Small between New Big Dwarf and Mortgage Lifter, Pesta Strain and named Pesty. Dwarf Caitydid was selected and named by Craig LeHoullier. The name is a combination of Craig’s daughter Caitlin’s name with the well known insect. It just seemed to be a perfect fit!
